Hockey Honey

Hockey Honey

Derbyverse Episode 1.8, with Hockey Honey Hockey Honey was the first double-length interview for Derbyverse, and my second “then and now” episode. The first part was filmed at the Everett Skate Deck in Everett, Washington on September 9, 2011. The second part was filmed at RollerCon in Las Vegas on July 25, 2012. I would have to say that Hockey Honey went through the biggest change of anyone between the time I first interviewed her and when her Derbyverse episode aired. When I met her,...

Joyride

Joyride

Derbyverse Episode 1.7, with Joyride Joyride from Rose City was the first interview I did in two parts. I shot the original bit at the Burnside Skate Park in Portland, Oregon on October 8, 2011. But then when I was editing her segment in the late spring of 2012, I realized that a lot of it was dated and I wanted to check back in. So I interviewed her a second time at RollerCon in Las Vegas on July 29, 2012. In the first part of the interview, she talked a lot about the personal challenges she’s...

Mercy

Mercy

Derbyverse Episode 1.6, with Mercy I interviewed Mercy at Bananelope Coffee in Broomfield, Colorado, when she was in town for Champs 2011. She’s a very funny and kind person, which I hope comes out at least a little in the video. I think I have the most fun doing these interviews when I’m able to get the subject to talk about things far removed from roller derby, so hearing Mercy talk about her desire to learn ballet was a treat.

Frankie Facebreaker

Frankie Facebreaker

Derbyverse Episode 1.5, with Frankie Facebreaker On October 12, 2011, I interviewed Frankie Facebreaker of Emerald City. At the time, she was assistant manager at Voodoo Donut Tres, in Eugene, Oregon. I loved being able to interview her at Voodoo Doughnut because my favorite roller derby documentary was “Brutal Beauty” and one of my favorite scenes was where Rose City coach Rob Lobster explains the basics of roller derby using donuts in the kitchen of one of the Portland Voodoo Doughnut...

Soulfearic Acid

Soulfearic Acid

Derbyverse Episode 1.4, with Soulfearic Acid It was a cold, rainy evening in Portland, Oregon when I interviewed Soulfearic Acid at the practice facility of the Rose City Rollers – October 5, 2011, just days after the RCR All-Star team got 3rd place in the Western region tournament.  I remember Acid just walked in the door and said, “OK, let’s go.”  So she did the interview with her heavy winter coat on, just inside the main door.  My favorite part of this interview is...

Eric Rawk

Eric Rawk

Derbyverse Episode 1.3, with Eric Rawk Eric Rawk talked to me on camera in Seattle, Washington on September 9, 2011. It was right before a Rat City Rollergirls scrimmage at their practice facility. I haven’t interviewed many officials in roller derby, but Rawk is such a distinctive figure in derby in the Pacific Northwest that I felt he was the perfect zebra for Season 1. Where are they now: Rawk and I keep crossing paths. From September 2011 to November 2012, I think I’ve run into Rawk...

Donita Mann

Donita Mann

Derbyverse Episode 1.2, with Donita Mann On August 22, 2011, I interviewed Donita Mann in the locker room of the Tilted Thunder Rail Birds’ practice facility in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle. I love her message of gaining self-confidence and empowerment through her involvement in Roller Derby. The very first banked track roller derby bout I was was Tilted Thunder’s 2011 season championship, in Everett, Washington. I made a video from the footage I shot at that bout. Where they are...

Mater and BFG

Mater and BFG

Derbyverse Episode 1.1, with Re-AnimateHer and Betty Ford Galaxy I talked to this duo on September 6, 2011 at Cecilia’s Temple of Groom in West Seattle, Washington. These two are a total crack-up when you get them together. They have such different personalities, but they make a great team. I especially love the message they have to share about the importance of appreciating your fans. Where are they now: After doing this interview, Re-AnimateHer and BFG both finished out the 2011 season with...
