There’s an international movement of quad roller skaters who enjoy skatepark (“vert”) skating. They’re called Chicks in Bowls, and Colorado recently formed a local chapter. They invited me to come shoot some video at the Lafayette Skatepark in Lafayette, Colorado on Monday September 22, 2014. Three chicks showed up — Syke-O Sarah, Joanna Gruesome, and Catastrophoebe. Here’s what I saw.
Artist’s note: A lot of skatepark videos just show off the skaters’ best tricks. But as a person who’s interested in the human element, I like watching a skater progress through the learning process to get to the end result. That’s why I include a lot of mistakes and falls in my videos, instead of just the “final product”. Strangers I meet who have seen my videos tell me they like this “human interest” side of the sport, so I hope you like it, too.
I shot one other video at the Lafayette skatepark (see http://derbyverse.com/quads-at-the-lafayette-skatepark) over a year ago, so it was nice to visit again. The weather this day was very unstable. There were a mix of very dark clouds with patches of bright blue sky, and the sun was going down toward the end. That’s why the light varies so much from shot to shot in this video. But I’m glad I got a few clips in the “golden hour” in the sexy orange sunset light that’s so special in Colorado.
