MMRD Team Bionic vs. LADD Tough Cookies

MMRD Team Bionic vs. LADD Tough Cookies

Missile Mountain Roller Derby’s Team Bionic’s first ever public bout was Saturday January 14, and I couldn’t resist driving to Colorado Springs to check it out. They competed against LA Derby Dolls’ Tough Cookies. Of course, I also couldn’t resist taking my video camera along. Here’s some of what I saw. Final score: Team Bionic 99, Tough Cookies 75

Two Heathers

Two Heathers

What I thought was a cute little clip of two of my favorite Heathers introducing themselves, turned out to have a split-second photobomb. That’s Heather Juska on the left, Heather Craig on the right, and – for a moment – Tracy Akers as the bomb.

Join Denver Roller Doll EEKlips on a brief tour of the Electrocuties’ luxurious locker room at the 1STBANK Center. I shot this to include in a new skater orientation video, but I like this segment so much I wanted to share it.

When I was at RollerCon 2012, I shot some footage of the challenge bout between The Vagine Regime and their arch-rivals The Caulk Suckers. This video is based on one of my favorite clips from that bout.

One Fine Lap

One Fine Lap

Two of my favorite blockers, Rivas and Mercy, harrass one of the world’s most famous jammers, Atomatrix. This is one lap of the action from the Vagine Regime vs. Caulk Suckers bout at RollerCon 2012. This is the kind of roller derby I love (except when Atomatrix gets away at the end).

Quads at the Lafayette Skatepark

Quads at the Lafayette Skatepark

On August 20, 2012, a group of roller derby skaters from the Boulder County Bombers and the Denver Roller Dolls made a trip to the Lafayette Skatepark in Lafayette, Colorado. For most, this was their first visit to a skatepark. For me, this was an opportunity to get some more experience shooting skating at a skatepark, and to experiment with my video camera’s Smooth Slow Record mode in daylight. Here’s what I saw.

Queerleaders Invade RollerCon

Queerleaders Invade RollerCon

The Queerleaders are the elite cheerleading squad for all-queer roller derby team Vagine Regime. I followed them before and during for The Vagine Regime’s headliner bout against their heterosexual arch-rivals The Caulk Suckers at RollerCon 2012. It was not only the most fun bout of the week, but one of the closest and most exciting. To learn more about Vagine Regime, visit vagineregime.com.

Reaction

Reaction

Here’s the reaction of my two nieces to the news that the Oly Rollers had just added three world-class players after the playoff seedings were announced. If you’re not really up on current events in the roller derby world as of August 2012, this probably won’t make a bit of sense to you. If so, just enjoy watching Molly and Megan. Sorry, I plugged the mic into the wrong jack on the camera, which is why there’s no audio, just subtitles.

DRD Mile High Club vs. MNRG All-Stars – May 5, 2013

DRD Mile High Club vs MNRG All-Stars May 5, 2013 DRD Glitterdome, Denver, Colorado Here is the complete bout. The audio portion was broadcast live thanks to volunteers of Derby News Network. But due to limited bandwidth at the Glitterdome, there was no live video broadcast. So here is the video archive. This video doesn’t have a scoreboard overlay and is from only one camera, but I’m sure you will enjoy it anyhow. The DNN announcers did a great job in keeping keeping the listeners updated...

3D Derby – requires red/cyan glasses

3D Derby – requires red/cyan glasses

Here’s my first 3D video, and the only 3D roller derby video I’ve ever seen. It shows a day in the life of To Infinity and Yvonne, a skater on the Denver Roller Dolls’ Bruising Altitude “junior varsity” travel team. To get the 3D effect, you’ll need to wear red/cyan glasses. If you don’t have any, you can go check out the 2D version of the film I uploaded. This film was created for a fast film making contest that was part of the Boulder International Film...

3D Derby – flat version, requires no special glasses

Here’s my first 3D video, and the only 3D roller derby video I’ve ever seen. It shows a day in the life of To Infinity and Yvonne, a skater on the Denver Roller Dolls’ Bruising Altitude “junior varsity” travel team. The film was shot and originally presented in 3D using RealD technology. But since most people don’t have red/cyan glasses at home, and almost nobody has a true 3D-capable monitor, I made this special 2D version so the rest of you could watch it. This...

RollerCon Skatepark Tour 7-29-2012

RollerCon Skatepark Tour 7-29-2012

All week at RollerCon 2012, roller derby skaters from around the world were invited to sample the skateparks of Las Vegas. On the last day of RollerCon, Sunday night July 29, 2012, I was able to tag along with my camera. We went to the Anthem Skatepark, arriving just after sundown. Some of the skaters were totally new to vert roller skating, and some had done it for years. I think everyone had a good time, and I got to try shooting video at the skatepark for the first time. Here’s the result.
